Real Meat Guarantee Any scheme is only as good as the proof, the Real Meat Company have pioneered a 'Total Transparency' scheme. Which means they are happy to reveal to customers or journalists alike
literally any aspect of the way meat is produced - from a full list of
farmers to visits to abattoirs.
| With 'free range', 'organic' and other wonderful descriptions everywhere, discerning shoppers requiring a genuine source of meat and poultry where welfare, purity and eating quality are the top priorities. By remaining independent of the supermarkets and the mainstream meat industry, we can set standards that fulfill all expectations. This is how we bring our customers 'Flavour Without Equal Welfare Without Compromise!'. Independence It is vital that we are independent of the conventional meat and intensive farming industries. We answer only to our customers. We sell exclusively through our own network of independent Authorised Stockists. This avoids inevitable pressures on our standards presented by supermarkets committed to profit, not righting the wrongs of intensive farming. Welfare As pioneers of the Real Meat movement, it goes without saying that we operate the highest standard of welfare. Our unique Welfare/Diet Codes comprehensively cover standards on the farms, live transport and the abattoirs, going beyond organic, and way beyond supermarket free range. Our producers are second or third generation farmers with a wealth of experience of genuine traditional farming. Purity We ban all growth promoters, pre-emptive medication regimes (used to keep animals fit in intensive conditions) and artificial yolk colourants. None of our beef farmers has had a case of BSE reported on their farms, in any of their animals - ever. Flavour A longer life span, varied diet and lower stress throughout compliment the breeds chosen for flavour and eating quality. The pleasurable result of caring, additive free, traditional farming is meat with the rich, mature flavour of a generation past. Hanging and handling of all meat and curing of bacon and ham are all performed with priority to tenderness and flavour. The Proof Any scheme is only as good as the proof that all promises are being met. That is why we pioneered a unique 'Total Transparency'. Total Transparency means that we are happy to reveal to customers or journalists alike literally any aspect of the way we produce our meat - from a full list of our farmers to visits to abattoirs. Abattoir practice is one of the key things that sets The Real Meat Company apart from others. We are very fussy about which abattoirs are used, of course. But they also fall within the transparency remit of the Company. In other words no one who has ever asked to visit the abattoir has ever been turned down. For obvious reasons, not many people ask. To qualify for The Real Meat Company, abattoirs must; allow access to any bona fide person we wish to bring - very few abattoirs are willing to do this; kill by hand to avoid failure rate of mechanical systems - most poultry is killed by machine, ours is not; have comfortable, clean, watered and strawed waiting areas for cattle, lambs and pigs - many places stint on this. The Real Meat Company currently use one abattoir for cattle, pigs and lambs. It fits our welfare criteria, is a small family owned establishment and is centrally placed to avoid lengthy journeys for the stock. The chicken abattoir fits our welfare requirements and is located near the chicken farm. Journeys to the abattoir are limited in duration, must be performed by nominated hauliers or the farmers themselves. Bedding must be provided - including chickens. Real Meat Company farmers operate to the highest standards of purity and welfare, following our unique Welfare/Diet Codes. These standards are independently checked by a specialist team from Bristol
University Veterinary School; which make regular independent checks on
all farms and check thoroughly and frequently than under any
other scheme. |
