The experts reckon we eat too much saltThe Food Standards Agency hopes the 26m people who it says are consuming more salt than is healthy for them will heed its health warnings. High salt consumption can contribute to high blood pressure, which can
lead to heart disease and stroke, it says.
The daily recommended amounts are 6g daily - Men have a daily average of 11g of salt while women have an average of 8.1g a day. Read the labels. See how much salt is in food. Quick hints for less salt
Salt makes food taste "better" - and we become used to how food tastes with lots of salt. Therefore we like food better with that much extra salt in. In order to eat less salt overall we need to re-educate ourselves to like food without as much salt in. Salt is labelled as sodium on most food labels - which probably isn't the easiest thing for most people to remember when they're checking everything they need to about eating healthily. As time goes on more food manufacturers will be likely to produce low salt food - watch out for them. Try giving your family more unprocessed foods or those with lower salt levels. Avoid the obvious foods which they love salt on - chips have to be the most common food eaten with salt on!
Weaning your family off salt might be a lot of hard work but it'll be good for you! Suggestions for more things to doYou could write to your supermarket and ask them to reduce the salt in their own brand foods! Write to your favourite restaurants and ask them about the levels of salt in their food. Write to your favourite food companies and ask them to reduce salt in their products!
